Time with God Leads to Revelation and Vision

Vision of God’s Law

Proverbs 29:18

As you spend time with God in Proverbs, we get a feel for the wisdom God gave King Solomon. Reading the written word of God gives us a glimpse into the thoughts of Jesus.

As an example, Proverbs 29:18 gives us a glimpse of the state of Israel during the time of Judges, but it also is somewhat prophetic about our society today.

Where there is no revelation, the people cast off restraint; but happy is he who keeps the law (NKJV)

Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he. (KJV)

Misquoted

Research has revealed that this is also one of the most misquoted passages of the Bible. Some pastors I have met have used this passage to promote programs that financially benefit their church. Only stating the pastor’s vision and not God’s vision. This proverb has also been misinterpreted thinking it only represents prophetic visions, or some may judge you unfairly by saying you are not saved or lack blessing if you, as a Christian, don’t have visions or speak in tongues.

Lack of Vision

King Solomon, using God’s wisdom, stated that without the teaching of God and God’s law people will follow their own perverted rules, casting off all Divine restraint and engage in behavior that is against God.

Without God’s Law

During the time of Judges, Chronicles, and 1st and 2nd Kings, the Israeli leaders and people strayed from God’s law. They embraced other ungodly cultures, religious practices, and beliefs. These activities even included child sacrifice. God was GREATLY distressed and grieved.

In this passage, revelation and vision mean the same thing. The root word “reveal” means to reveal the teaching of God’s law to the people, so they know right from wrong. In the absence of the moral teaching of God’s law, the people invented their own law in self-justification. Without God’s teaching, our inborn sinful nature takes over. The end result was God’s wrath that led to the Babylonian destruction and occupation of Israel that lasted seventy years.

The generation that engaged in this ungodly behavior had to perish first before God would allow Israel to rebuild their nation. This was almost double the time they spent in the wilderness searching for the Promised Land. How quickly they forget without God’s wisdom.

In a Fallen World

It is said that if we don’t learn from history, we are doomed to repeat it. Society today has slowly strayed away from God’s path and wisdom. Behavior that was totally unacceptable seventy years ago is now tolerated, and some even celebrate such actions. We live in a fallen world, and Satan wants to drag you away from God by any means available. Remember, he is a master of deception and lies.

A Loving Father

God doesn’t want to punish you or harm you in any way, He made you, and He is your loving Father. God wants to protect you and guide you to be the best person He made you to be. “Happy is he that keeps the law.” If we as a race don’t realize the parallel between today and Israel of long ago, we as a nation and a culture are going to perish just as they did.

We must realize God loves us, Jesus died for us, and the Holy Spirit is here with us. God’s wisdom and God’s word never changes. Proverbs 29:18 is as relevant today as it was over three thousand years ago.

Light The Path Unto My Feet

Reach out to Jesus’ extended hand of friendship and pick up your Bible. The wisdom of God and the love of Jesus are found there first. Spend time with God and let the light of Christ build and shine within you and let His word light your path.

May God Bless You
