Spending Time with God in Psalms

Psalms are Worship Songs

Worship and Real Feeling with Psalms

The Psalms are a collection of Praise and worship songs spanning over 400 years. They allow people to spend time with God and study the entire realm of human emotion God has bestowed on His people, all people. Joy, anger, despair, love, fright, elation, and many more feelings are shown.

The Psalms were written by God and penned by various people and families. King David wrote at least 73, possibly more, Asaph 12, Solomon 2, the family of Korah 2, Heman 1, Ethan 1, Moses 1, the remaining Psalms are considered orphan Psalms; the author could not be verified, but most Biblical scholars think David wrote most of these also.

The Psalms were organized into five books or sections. Book 1: Psalm 1-41, Book 2: Psalms 42-72, Book 3 Psalms 73-89, Book 4 Psalms 90-106, and book 5 Psalms 107-150.

God Himself put these 150 Psalms together for us, the human race. He wants us to know the feelings that were expressed then, are the feelings that we are dealing with now. Spend time with God; He can teach us so many things if we listen to our wise and loving Father.

Psalm 1

The way of the righteous and the end of the ungodly.

This Psalm is considered an orphan Psalm. It opens up explaining how man is blessed if he does not follow the world. It says “Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the path of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful.”

This passage tells us not to be of this world and that if we choose to “stand with” or in the path of the ungodly that we, ourselves will be influenced by the ungodly. Mankind will eventually place themselves “in the seat of the scornful.” We as a people will join their unrighteous behavior instead of fighting it. We are the company we keep.

To Delight in the Lord

The next few passages tell us about the happiness of the man who delights in the Lord, and comparing the word of God to the Living Waters that nourish a tree that flourishes with the blessings of God. We should think and ponder on the word of God day and night.

God loves to bless the obedient. The Lord, however, doesn’t promise stress-free living; trials will come, but eventual victory has been guaranteed.

“The ungodly are not so, but like the chaff which the wind drives away.” This statement is self-explanatory. The ungodly will not have everlasting life; Satan’s purpose will not succeed. God takes the long view; it seems to us that He makes no distinction between the righteous and the unrighteous. However, God knows the outcome beforehand, He clearly states the ungodly will perish.

I am including a link to Calvary Chapel of Philadelphia. Senior Pastor Joe Focht has an extensive Bible study on Psalms. I hope you will find his teaching inspiring as he teaches about Gods word.
