Why We Pray

Prayer is an excellent way to spend time with God. However, prayer is not required for God’s benefit. God can create all the worship He needs or wants. Why we pray is solely for us. When God created man, He made us with an inherent need to connect with our Heavenly Father.

Prayer allows His creation to worship Him, so we may keep God close to our hearts. Without prayer, God slips slowly out of our hearts, and we find other worldly things to fill the internal void.

Prayer is one of the most special times we can have with God. The busy lifestyle most people lead doesn’t allow for time with Him. However as busy as we are, in our fast food pace of life, Jesus is only “called upon” when we have a problem we can’t solve on our own. This is actually quite destructive to a Holy and productive prayer life.

As God sees It

One example I heard from a holy and wise man was this: Let’s say your problem is the size of a dime. You pick it up and realize it’s only a dime, but if you hold it up close to your eye, this dime becomes the only thing you’re going to see. It can consume all your attention until it becomes the focal point of your life. The “problem” is all you think about so you open up in prayer asking Jesus to fix your “problem,” it has consumed your waking moments. It’s all you think about, and it’s all you pray about. You are forgetting a huge issue, God is bigger than any “problem,” and to Him it’s only a dime.

He’s Got This

Jesus the Son of God, Jesus who is God, can handle every “problem.” We must consistently remind ourselves of that fact. Prayer must consist of praise and worship so we mere humans can remind ourselves that He’s got this. God wants to do everything well for us, and we must stay in continual contact with Him. This builds our spiritual strength to a point where we can withstand, with God’s help, anything Satan can throw at us. Remember He is God.

His Will Alone

Earlier I mentioned “calling upon” Jesus summoning Him for our will. DO NOT MAKE THIS MISTAKE!  We are called by God alone. There are dozens of examples of the Holy Spirit calling someone for His will, not ours. Any request we make needs to serve His purpose. God created for us for a  purpose, His purpose.

Prayer, whatever the type, brings us closer to Jesus. Our faith is strengthened by a personal relationship with our Lord and Savior by reading about Jesus and how He saved us all from hell. Three days after His crucifixion He rose from the grave. Only God, the Son of God, and the Holy Spirit has the power to rise from the grave and defeat Satan. The evil one has lost. As you pray remember Jesus has already won the battle.

Only Jesus

One of the lies our enemy wants you to believe is Satan is stronger than God. The world wants you to think all gods are equal or all religions lead to one spiritual existence, which is another lie. Reading the Bible, attending a Bible-believing church, and spending quality time in prayer with your Lord and Savior is the best way to get to know Jesus.

If you want to know God a little better, If you’re curious about Him or don’t really know Him but want to, prayer is an excellent start. Maybe you know Him well, but life has knocked you around a little and doubt has crept in, or your devotion to Christ is strong, and you’re a leader in your church, Jesus will meet you at your level and grow your faith. He’s a fantastic friend, and He’s asking for your friendship and service. Just open your Bible and turn the page. Then in prayer ask Him to open your eyes in understanding.
